Hearing Implant

How Hearing works?

Types of hearing loss?

Conductive Hearing loss

Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound conduction is disrupted in the outer or middle ear. Conductive hearing loss occurs generally between the ranges of 25 to 65 decibels indicating mild or moderate hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss can be treated by using suitable hearing aids, a middle ear implant or a bone conduction implant.

Sensorineural hearing loss

Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when the hair cells in the cochlear are absent or impaired. Sensorineural hearing loss can be a permanent impairment ranging from mild, moderate, profound to severe hearing losses in some cases. Mild to severe losses can be treated with hearing aids or middle ear implants whereas severe to profound hearing loss cases can opt for a cochlear implant. In some cases, the hearing loss could be in the high frequency regions that can be supported by electric and acoustic stimulation (EAS) developed exclusively for this purpose.

Mixed Hearing loss

Mixed hearing loss occurs when the person has both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss causing problems on both inner and outer/ middle ear. Mixed hearing loss can be treated by surgery, hearing aids, middle ear implants or bone conduction implant.

Neural Hearing loss

Neural hearing losses are caused due to damages in the auditory nerve that transmits the signals from the cochlea to the brain. Neural hearing losses are generally profound and permanent, hence the use of hearing aids or hearing implants may prove unsuccessful. However, in many cases an Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI) may be a curative option.

Types of Hearing Implants

Cochlear implant

The cochlear implant is an implantable device that can be used to regain the sense of hearing for persons with severe to profound hearing losses. Hearing aids generally will not benefit for persons with sensorineural hearing losses. The CI is composed of two devices the implant that rests under the skin of the skull with an electrode array that is carefully inserted in to the cochlear as a replacement for impaired hair cells and an external processor that receives sounds and generates electrical signals which is transferred via magnetic contact to the implant for electrical stimulation. Middle ear implant

The middle ear implant is an implantable device that can be used to regain the sense of hearing for persons with mild to severe hearing losses. Hearing aids can be an option however to regain the natural hearing capability, a middle ear implant can be used. The middle ear implant consists of two modules the processor that attaches on the outer skin of the skull and an implantable device that is placed surgically under the skin of the skull. The processor converts sound stimulations to electrical signals that are then transferred to the implant via magnetic contact. The implant then transfers the signals to the floating mass transducer (FMT) that produces corresponding mechanical vibrations in the middle ear structure (the ossicular chain) in order to allow the cochlear to comprehend the signals thus regaining natural hearing. How Middle ear implant works?

Bone bridge implant

The Bone bridge implant is an implantable device that can be used to regain natural hearing in persons that have lasting hearing loss following an middle ear operation, malformations. The bone bridge implant is also an option for people with conductive and mixed hearing losses.  The bone conduction implant consists of 2 modules, an external processor and an implant that is surgically placed under the skin. The Bone bridge implant receives sound stimulations from the environment and converts it to electrical signal that is then transferred via magnetic contact to the implant. The implant then transmits the sound waves via conduction to the inner ear where it is processed as sound.

Medpor Implants

Medpor Implants by STRYKER, are special polymer plus bone mass implants that provide patients with microtia (deformed ear pinna) with a reconstructed ear through plastic surgery. The Medpor implants are crafted by surgeons and is covered with a very thin layer of living tissue taken from beneath the scalp allowing the medpor implant to integrate with the living tissue. After few weeks the ear would heal with a completed healthy pinna structure would be revealed.

Why you should not hesitate to use a hearing implant?

The hearing implant is a revolutionary technology that can help persons with severe hearing impairment to hear naturally like everyone else. Hearing is one of the crucial human senses that are often neglected. The hearing implant not only regains the natural hearing senses but also helps the wearer to effectively communicate with people in social situations. The ability to respond to people’s questions determines a person’s personality in social situations. Also, continuous inability to communicate to people can create psychological implications and fatigue. Using a hearing implant will almost eliminate the hearing loss and thereby allow the user to enjoy the sounds of life.
